## Trust breakdown

How this component scores in each security and reliability category. Every signal is checked automatically from public evidence about the published package, including repeated runs of it in an isolated sandbox, and we only credit what we can confirm. Scores are 0–100 per category. Scoring method: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring (what has changed: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring/changelog)

Scored 2026-11-05.

- **Supply Chain Security**: 100/100
  - No malware found by supply-chain analysis.
  - No known CVEs affecting this package version or its production dependencies.
  - Runs setuptools.build_meta at install time, a recognised build step with no custom scripting around it.
  - 0 of 28 dependencies flagged as unhealthy.
- **Provenance & Transparency**: 100/100
  - Source repository is publicly reachable at the declared URL.
  - Cryptographically verified build provenance (signed, bound to tidybytetools/md-chunk-lite).
  - Clear OSI-approved license (MIT).
  - Actively maintained (last published 0 days ago).
  - Publishes a security disclosure policy (SECURITY.md).
- **Schema Quality & AI Usability**: 68/100
  - AI-judged instruction clarity (excellent).
  - Context-footprint check failed: tool/resource definitions use about 1216 tokens (~304/item across 4 items; 4 tools + 0 resources), over budget; trim descriptions and params.
  - Usage-examples check failed: none of the tools include examples.
- **Stability & Change Management**: 0/100
  - Stability not yet verified: not enough scan history yet (needs a 30-day window).
- **Tool Coverage**: 100/100
  - 100% of tools have a non-trivial description (not blank, and not just the tool's name).
  - 100% of tool parameters carry a description.
- **Tool Safety**: 100/100
  - No prompt-injection markers were found in the server instructions, tool names or descriptions we captured.
  - We read all 4 captured tool definition(s), and no name or description among them implies an irreversible operation.
  - An AI judge read all 4 captured unit(s) of tool text and found none that tries to manipulate the model reading it.
- **Capabilities**: 100/100
  - Implements a supported MCP spec version (2025-11-25); the latest is 2026-07-28.

**Unverified: 1 category.** A category scored 0 because we could not verify it: a data source with nothing on this package, evidence we could not reach, or a check we could not run. We only credit what we can confirm.

## MCP tools (4)

### `chunk_markdown` (~425 tokens)

Split Markdown into chunks

Split a Markdown file or Markdown text into chunks by heading, for search, embeddings or RAG.

Use this when you need a long Markdown document (docs, notes, a README) broken
into pieces that each know where they came from. A chunk never mixes two
sections. Each chunk has heading_path (like ["Guide", "Install"]), anchor
(the GitHub-style #link), start_line and end_line (1-based, in the file), part
and parts (when a big section had to be split), chars and text. Code blocks and
tables are kept whole when they fit; when they don't, each piece gets the fence
or table header again. Plain code, not AI: same input, same chunks.

Do not use it for PDF or Word files (convert them to Markdown first), to just
see the headings (use outline_markdown), or to read one section (use
get_section). Sizes are characters, not tokens.

Returns {"source", "total", "start", "chunks": [...], "next_start"}. next_start
is null when there are no more chunks.

Input parameters:

- `limit` (integer): Most chunks to return in one call. Default 100.
- `max_chars` (integer): Biggest chunk size in characters (not tokens). Default 1500.
- `overlap_chars` (integer): Characters repeated from the end of one part at the start of the next, only when a section is split. Must be at most half of max_chars. Default 0.
- `path` (string): Full path to a local Markdown or text file (UTF-8, up to 10 MB). Leave empty if you pass text.
- `prefix_path` (boolean): If true, each chunk text starts with its heading path, like "Guide > Install".
- `start` (integer): First chunk number to return (1 = the first). Use next_start from the last call to get more.
- `text` (string): Markdown text to use instead of a file. Leave empty if you pass path.

### `outline_markdown` (~222 tokens)

List Markdown headings

List every heading in a Markdown file or text, with its level, path, anchor, line number and size.

Use this when you want a quick map of a long document before you read or chunk
it, or to find the exact heading or anchor to pass to get_section. Headings
inside code blocks and YAML front matter are ignored. Both "# Title" and
underlined (=== / ---) headings are found.

Do not use it to get the text itself (use get_section or chunk_markdown).

Returns {"source", "count", "headings": [{"level", "title", "path", "anchor",
"line", "end_line", "chars"}]}. chars is the size of that heading's own text,
not counting the sections under it.

Input parameters:

- `path` (string): Full path to a local Markdown or text file (UTF-8, up to 10 MB). Leave empty if you pass text.
- `text` (string): Markdown text to use instead of a file. Leave empty if you pass path.

### `get_section` (~288 tokens)

Get one Markdown section

Return the text of one section of a Markdown file or text, found by heading title or anchor.

Use this when you only need one part of a long document, like the "Install"
section of a README, so you don't have to read the whole file. If two headings
have the same title, the first one is returned and "matches" tells you how many
there are; use the anchor (from outline_markdown) to pick another.

Do not use it to split the whole document (use chunk_markdown).

Returns {"title", "heading_path", "level", "anchor", "start_line", "end_line",
"chars", "matches", "text"}. If nothing matches, the error lists the headings.

Input parameters:

- `anchor` (string): Anchor to find, like "install" or "install-1" for the second "Install". Wins over heading.
- `heading` (string): Heading title to find, like "Install". Not case sensitive. Leave empty if you pass anchor.
- `include_subsections` (boolean): If true (default), include the smaller headings under it.
- `path` (string): Full path to a local Markdown or text file (UTF-8, up to 10 MB). Leave empty if you pass text.
- `text` (string): Markdown text to use instead of a file. Leave empty if you pass path.

### `save_chunks_jsonl` (~281 tokens)

Save chunks to a JSONL file

Split a Markdown file into chunks and save them as a JSONL file (one chunk per line).

Use this when the chunks are going into a search index, vector database or
another program, and you want a file instead of a long chat reply. The chunks
are the same as chunk_markdown gives. It writes only the one .jsonl file and
replaces it if it is already there. It never changes the Markdown file.

Do not use it to look at chunks in the chat (use chunk_markdown).

Returns {"output_path", "chunks", "bytes", "biggest_chunk_chars"}.

Input parameters:

- `max_chars` (integer): Biggest chunk size in characters (not tokens). Default 1500.
- `output_path` (string): Where to save. Must end in .jsonl. Default: next to the input, as NAME.chunks.jsonl.
- `overlap_chars` (integer): Characters repeated from the end of one part at the start of the next, only when a section is split. Must be at most half of max_chars. Default 0.
- `path` (string, required): Full path to the local Markdown file to split (UTF-8, up to 10 MB).
- `prefix_path` (boolean): If true, each chunk text starts with its heading path, like "Guide > Install".

## Common questions

### What is the md-chunk-lite MCP server?

md-chunk-lite is an MCP server listed in the public MCP registry as io.github.tidybytetools/md-chunk-lite. Split Markdown into chunks by heading. Each chunk keeps its heading path and line numbers. This page covers its PyPI package (md-chunk-lite).

### Is the md-chunk-lite MCP server safe to use?

md-chunk-lite scores 80 out of 100 on VerifyMCP. We found no known CVEs affecting it as of 5 November 2026. Its build provenance is signed and verified. That is a record of what we were able to check automatically, not an endorsement. The category breakdown on this page shows every signal behind the number, including the ones we could not confirm.

### What tools does the md-chunk-lite MCP server expose?

md-chunk-lite exposes 4 tools: chunk_markdown, outline_markdown, get_section, save_chunks_jsonl. Their descriptions and schemas cost roughly 1,216 tokens of context every time the server is loaded.

### Is the md-chunk-lite MCP server still maintained?

md-chunk-lite is still listed as active in the MCP registry. We last reached this channel on 5 November 2026. Those dates come from our own scans of the registry and the channel itself, not from anything the publisher announced.

### What licence is the md-chunk-lite MCP server under?

md-chunk-lite declares the MIT licence, which is OSI-approved. That covers the source only, and says nothing about the cost of any service it calls.
