## Trust breakdown

How this component scores in each security and reliability category. Every signal is checked automatically against the live server, and we only credit what we can confirm. Scores are 0–100 per category. Scoring method: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring (what has changed: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring/changelog)

Scored 2026-11-05.

- **Endpoint Security**: 57/100
  - The endpoint's TLS certificate is valid, in date, and uses a strong key.
  - Authorisation not fully verified: no authorisation is required to call this server, and 9 tool(s) never declared a destructiveHint. The MCP spec treats an absent hint as destructive by default, so we cannot call this surface safe.
  - HTTPS is enforced; there's no plaintext access path.
  - HSTS check failed: the Strict-Transport-Security header is absent.
  - DNSSEC check failed: this domain isn't protected by DNSSEC.
- **Transport & Reachability**: 100/100
  - Verified streamable-http transport via a live MCP handshake.
- **Schema Quality & AI Usability**: 74/100
  - AI-judged instruction clarity (good).
  - Tool/resource definitions use about 965 tokens (~107/item across 9 items; 9 tools + 0 resources), lean.
  - Usage-examples check failed: none of the tools include examples.
- **Stability & Change Management**: 20/100
  - Stability observed for 6 of 30 days with no destabilising changes; credit accrues until the full window elapses.
- **Tool Coverage**: 100/100
  - 100% of tools have a non-trivial description (not blank, and not just the tool's name).
  - 100% of tool parameters carry a description.
- **Tool Safety**: 100/100
  - No prompt-injection markers were found in the server instructions, tool names or descriptions we captured.
  - We read all 9 captured tool definition(s), and no name or description among them implies an irreversible operation.
  - An AI judge read all 10 captured unit(s) of tool text and found none that tries to manipulate the model reading it.
- **Capabilities**: 60/100
  - Spec-recency check failed: implements MCP spec 2025-06-18; the latest is 2026-07-28.

## Changelog

Every change recorded for this component, newest first. Days that predate change tracking, or that we cannot explain, say so: "we were watching and nothing happened" and "we were not watching" are different claims.

### 2026-11-04 (score 65, +1)

No change was recorded against any check on this day. Stability & Change Management went from 13 to 17. That category is still filling its 30-day observation window: 4 days of observed history at the previous scan, 5 at this one. The score rises as the window fills, whether or not the server changes.

### 2026-11-01 (score 64, +1)

No change was recorded against any check on this day. Stability & Change Management went from 3 to 7. That category is still filling its 30-day observation window: 1 days of observed history at the previous scan, 2 at this one. The score rises as the window fills, whether or not the server changes.

### 2026-10-31 (score 63, 0)

## MCP tools (9)

### `sky_seeing` (~149 tokens)

Is tonight actually usable for stargazing or astrophotography? Combines real dark hours and true moon illumination (computed from first principles) with live hourly cloud cover, weighting low cloud above high cloud. Returns a 0-100 usability score per night hour, the best consecutive usable run, and a plain verdict. lat/lon required; tz_offset and when optional.

Input parameters:

- `lat` (number, required): Latitude, -90..90.
- `lon` (number, required): Longitude, -180..180.
- `tz_offset` (number): Hours offset from UTC for local clock labels. Default: estimated from longitude.
- `when` (string): Optional ISO date/time to plan for. Default now.

### `watch` (~189 tokens)

Stateful quake subscriptions. Unlike a local tool, the filter and its cursor are stored on the server, so poll returns ONLY events newer than your last poll - no re-scanning, no client-side dedupe. Actions: create (min_magnitude, place), poll (id), list, delete (id).

Input parameters:

- `action` (string, required): create a subscription, poll it, list yours, or delete one.
- `id` (string): Subscription id (for poll/delete).
- `min_magnitude` (number): Minimum magnitude for create. Default 0.
- `owner` (string): Optional namespace to group subscriptions. Default 'public'.
- `place` (string): Substring place filter for create, e.g. 'Japan'.
- `since_hours` (number): On create, seed the cursor this many hours back so the very first poll can return existing events. Default 0 (only new events).

### `earthquakes` (~119 tokens)

Recent earthquakes from USGS. Filter by window (hour/day/week/month), minimum magnitude, and place text. Returns magnitude, place, depth, time.

Input parameters:

- `limit` (integer): Max events returned, 1-100. Default 20.
- `min_magnitude` (number): Minimum magnitude, e.g. 4.5. Default 0.
- `place` (string): Substring match on the place name, e.g. 'Japan'. Not a geographic polygon search.
- `window` (string): Lookback window. Default day.

### `weather` (~56 tokens)

Current weather and the next 12 hours for a latitude/longitude, from Open-Meteo. No API key required.

Input parameters:

- `latitude` (number, required): -90 to 90.
- `longitude` (number, required): -180 to 180.

### `iss_position` (~18 tokens)

Current latitude/longitude of the International Space Station.

### `earth_now` (~30 tokens)

One-shot summary of what is happening on Earth right now: 24h earthquake totals plus current ISS position.

### `sky_tonight` (~118 tokens)

Real sky for a place and night: sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset, true moon phase and illumination, and the best dark window for stargazing. Computed from first principles (no key, no ephemeris file).

Input parameters:

- `lat` (number, required): Latitude in degrees (-90..90)
- `lon` (number, required): Longitude in degrees (-180..180)
- `tz_offset` (number): Hours offset from UTC (optional)
- `when` (string): ISO date/time to use instead of now (optional)

### `moon_phase` (~55 tokens)

Current (or given date's) moon phase and illumination for a location.

Input parameters:

- `lat` (number): Latitude in degrees
- `lon` (number): Longitude in degrees
- `when` (string): ISO date/time (optional)

### `sky_at` (~104 tokens)

The real sky for a place and an instant: sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset, true moon phase and illumination, and the best dark window for stargazing. Pure astronomy, no API key.

Input parameters:

- `lat` (number, required): Latitude, decimal degrees.
- `lon` (number, required): Longitude, decimal degrees.
- `tz_offset` (number): Local UTC offset in hours. Optional.
- `when` (string): ISO date/datetime UTC. Defaults to now.

## Common questions

### What is the Earth & Sky MCP server?

Earth & Sky is an MCP server listed in the public MCP registry as io.sslip.13-62-217-51/earth-and-sky. Live earthquakes, ISS position, weather, moon phase, and true star visibility. No key. This page covers its hosted endpoint (https://13-62-217-51.sslip.io/mcp).

### Is the Earth & Sky MCP server safe to use?

Earth & Sky scores 65 out of 100 on VerifyMCP. That is a record of what we were able to check automatically, not an endorsement. The category breakdown on this page shows every signal behind the number, including the ones we could not confirm.

### What tools does the Earth & Sky MCP server expose?

Earth & Sky exposes 9 tools: sky_seeing, watch, earthquakes, weather, iss_position, and 4 more. Their descriptions and schemas cost roughly 838 tokens of context every time the server is loaded.

### Does the Earth & Sky MCP server require authentication?

No. We connected to Earth & Sky without credentials and it answered, so anything it exposes is reachable by anyone who knows the address.

### Is the Earth & Sky MCP server still maintained?

Earth & Sky is still listed as active in the MCP registry. We last reached this channel on 5 November 2026. Those dates come from our own scans of the registry and the channel itself, not from anything the publisher announced.
