## Trust breakdown

How this component scores in each security and reliability category. Every signal is checked automatically against the live server, and we only credit what we can confirm. Scores are 0–100 per category. Scoring method: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring (what has changed: https://verifymcp.io/docs/scoring/changelog)

Scored 2026-11-05.

- **Endpoint Security**: 74/100
  - The endpoint's TLS certificate is valid, in date, and uses a strong key.
  - No authorisation is required to call this server. Nothing on it is marked destructive, but we can't show that an anonymous caller can only read: full credit needs the server to list at least one tool and every tool to be verifiably read-only. We use a best-effort check of tool names and descriptions to tell read-only tools from tools that change things, so some genuinely read-only tools may not get full credit. Names that start with a read verb (get, list, read, search and similar) and accurate readOnlyHint annotations help. Meet that to earn full credit, or require authorisation.
  - HTTPS is enforced; there's no plaintext access path.
  - HSTS check failed: the Strict-Transport-Security header is absent.
  - DNSSEC check failed: this domain isn't protected by DNSSEC.
- **Transport & Reachability**: 100/100
  - Verified streamable-http transport via a live MCP handshake.
- **Schema Quality & AI Usability**: 72/100
  - 100% of prompts and resources have a non-trivial description (not blank, and not just the item's name).
  - AI-judged instruction clarity (good).
  - Context-footprint check failed: tool/resource definitions use about 1088 tokens (~362/item across 3 items; 3 tools + 0 resources), over budget; trim descriptions and params.
  - Usage-examples check failed: none of the tools include examples.
- **Stability & Change Management**: 100/100
  - No destabilizing schema changes in the last 30 days.
- **Tool Coverage**: 96/100
  - 100% of tools have a non-trivial description (not blank, and not just the tool's name).
  - 88% of tool parameters carry a description.
- **Tool Safety**: 100/100
  - No prompt-injection markers were found in the server instructions, tool names or descriptions we captured.
  - We read all 3 captured tool definition(s), and no name or description among them implies an irreversible operation.
  - An AI judge read all 4 captured unit(s) of tool text and found none that tries to manipulate the model reading it.
- **Capabilities**: 100/100
  - Implements a current MCP spec version (2026-07-28).

## Install

### How do I install the Overflow Design MCP server?

Overflow Design is a hosted endpoint at https://www.overflow.design/api/mcp/, so there is nothing to install locally. Ready-made configuration for Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Codex and 5 more is on this page, copied from each client's own documentation.

The mcpServers block is a cross-client convention. Remote transports vary, so check your client's docs.

## MCP tools (3)

### `search_drawings` (~212 tokens)

Search Overflow drawings

Searches Overflow Design's hand-drawn drawings by what they show: 1,120 icons, 457 illustrations and 259 isometric drawings. Use it when the user wants an icon, an illustration or an isometric drawing. Every word of the query must match a drawing's name or tags, and "icon", "illustration" or "isometric" in the query narrows the search to that set. Returns each match's id, name, set, category and page link, and marks the drawings this connection cannot fetch because they need an Overflow Pro licence.

Input parameters:

- `category` (string): Only this category, by its slug or its label.
- `limit` (integer)
- `offset` (integer)
- `query` (string): What the drawing should show, in plain words. Empty with a set or category to browse it.
- `set` (string): Only this set.
- `tier` (string): free for drawings anybody can fetch, pro for the ones that need Pro.

### `get_drawings` (~582 tokens)

Get Overflow drawings

Returns Overflow drawings by id, up to 20 at a time, as SVG or JSX. Icons and isometric stills of up to 32 KB come back inline as markup. Illustrations, larger isometric drawings and animated ones come back as a download link that works for fifteen minutes, with a curl command that saves the file; the delivery option returns them inline instead. An isometric drawing comes in any of the set page's six styles, facing right or left, and standing or lying where it has been drawn so. Free drawings need no key; the others, and the isometric Pro styles, need an Overflow Pro licence key sent with the connection. Each result ends with the licence terms.

Input parameters:

- `animated` (boolean): Isometric only: the moving version of the drawing, a custom element with its own script, that moves under the pointer. Every drawing of the set has one, the Anatomy figures included, in any style, fa…
- `colours` (object): Isometric yours only: its four colours as #rrggbb, ink (#16161a), faces (#fcfaf4), plinth (#c2d2c3), accent (#f2704a), the set page's defaults, which any left out keep.
- `delivery` (string): auto: inline for icons and isometric stills of up to 32 KB, a link for the rest. Or inline, or link.
- `facing` (string): Isometric only: which way the drawing faces. Left turns it round with its print still reading from the left; a sign, such as an arrow or a check, stays as drawn.
- `format` (string): svg, or jsx: the same markup with React attribute names, to paste into a component.
- `ids` (array, required): Drawing ids, such as icon/calendar, illustration/office-club/teamwork or isometric/240/crate.
- `pose` (string): Isometric only: as drawn, or standing or lying where the drawing has been drawn in that pose too; a search result lists a drawing's poses.
- `style` (string): Icons and illustrations: regular, the default, or duotone with a second, lighter tone. Isometric drawings: stroke, two-tone, duotone, fill, anatomy, yours, as on the set page, stroke by default; duot…
- `theme` (string): Isometric only: colours for a light page or a dark one.
- `weight`: Isometric only: the line weight, 0.5, 1 or 1.5. Duotone and fill have no lines.

### `list_sets` (~35 tokens)

List Overflow sets

Lists what Overflow Design has: the three sets with their counts, styles and categories, and what this connection's licence key unlocks.

## Common questions

### What is the Overflow Design MCP server?

Overflow Design is an MCP server listed in the public MCP registry as design.overflow/mcp. Search and fetch hand-drawn icons, illustrations and isometric drawings. The free set needs no key. This page covers its hosted endpoint (https://www.overflow.design/api/mcp/).

### Is the Overflow Design MCP server safe to use?

Overflow Design scores 84 out of 100 on VerifyMCP. That is a record of what we were able to check automatically, not an endorsement. The category breakdown on this page shows every signal behind the number, including the ones we could not confirm.

### What tools does the Overflow Design MCP server expose?

Overflow Design exposes 3 tools: search_drawings, get_drawings, list_sets. Their descriptions and schemas cost roughly 829 tokens of context every time the server is loaded.

### Does the Overflow Design MCP server require authentication?

No. We connected to Overflow Design without credentials and it answered, so anything it exposes is reachable by anyone who knows the address.

### Is the Overflow Design MCP server still maintained?

Overflow Design is still listed as active in the MCP registry. We last reached this channel on 5 November 2026. Those dates come from our own scans of the registry and the channel itself, not from anything the publisher announced.

### What did VerifyMCP test on the Overflow Design MCP server?

VerifyMCP ran 13 checks on Overflow Design, covering TLS certificate, Authorization, HTTPS, HSTS header and 9 more. Supply Chain Security and Provenance & Transparency do not apply to a hosted endpoint, so they were not tested. The score does not measure everything, and the scoring documentation lists what it leaves out.
